The Mispillion Art League will be open for the Holiday Stroll with a beautiful new exhibit and lots of art gift ideas! If you haven't been to the Art League yet, this is a great time for a visit. All the artists in the Studios Upstairs (above the Mispillion Art League and new Angelucci Gallery on Walnut St) are getting ready for the big downtown Holiday Stroll! We're decorating, baking, putting art work up and expecting lots of visitors. Holiday Stroll

This is my favorite downtown event of the year. Downtown Milford really comes alive for the annual Holiday Stroll. If you have never attended, I strongly suggest you come this year. Most shops and businesses are open late, offering good holiday cheer and refreshments, carolers, horse drawn carriage rides, Santa and Mrs Claus and more. The festive atmosphere will put you in a holiday mood! - and get some shopping done at the same time! - find lots of unique gifts you won't get at the mall.

Due to the upcoming Broadway revival of Evita, Second Street Players previously announced spring musical, amateur and professional performance licensing rights have been restricted by the publishers.

This will be the first ever Broadway revival of the hit Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical. The original production, which starred Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin, opened in 1979 and ran for 3½ years.

We regret that we will not be able to stage Evita, but we will announce more information about our new spring 2011 show early next year

The History of Doll Making Presentation

The Mispillion Art League “Third Monday” program for this month is a presentation by area resident and artist, Zelma Nicholas who will share her knowledge of the history of doll making. Having created porcelain antique dolls from their porcelain bodies right up to the clothing they wear, Zelma is an expert in this art form. She has donated numerous dolls that you may find on display in the Milford Museum and taught classes in doll making. She is also a painter and Jewelry designer.

I'm including this doll just for an example of the types of dolls Zelma has made. This one comes from Emily Hart who sells dolls like this one on her website.

Rare Finds Auction to benefit Mispillion Art League

Some of the neighbors at the Happy Hour tonight in the Hearthstone Clubhouse were asking about this event tomorrow night that benefits the Mispillion Art League - Milford's own art league. If you haven't been to the Art League, I urge you to go on downtown and visit us. We are located at 5 N. Walnut Street, right there on the Riverwalk, across the street from the Riverfront Theatre. We offer classes for children and adults, beginners to advanced.

Here's the scoop on tomorrow night's event. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

Happy Hour at the Clubhouse

A fun time was had by all who came tonight to the first Happy Hour at the Clubhouse! It was so nice to meet so many nice neighbors and feel more of a sense of belonging to this lovely community. We hope to do it every month and that more people will decide to join us. Everyone brought a dish to share and their own beverage. My slow-roasted tomatoes were a hit and I promised to share the recipe! It's so easy and soooo good!

Here it is:

2 pints cherry tomatoes (cut in half if they are large)
1/2 cup Olive Oil
4 -6 cloves garlic minced
basil (fresh or dried - I use a lot)

Roast in a 300 degree oven tender and popping - about an hour. Serve with sliced Italian bread

Halloween Safety Tips

In an effort to prepare for a safe Halloween, here are some safety tips for parents and children:

• Encourage children to trick-or-treat before dark. After dark, an adult chaperone should carry a flashlight and choose well-lighted streets.

• Wear costumes that are short, snug and flame retardant. Flowing sleeves, capes and skirts can cause children to trip and can catch fire if they brush against candle flames. Also be sure to wear light colors or reflective tape.

• Avoid masks that can obstruct vision. Use face paint instead or make sure mask eye holes are wide enough.

• Discourage the use of fake knives, guns and swords, as they may result in aggressive behavior. If these types of props are used, be sure they are made of flexible materials such as foam or rubber.

• Stay in groups while trick-or-treating and make sure young children always are accompanied by adults.

• Teach children that they should NEVER go into a stranger’s home or car.

• Eat dinner before trick-or-treating to prevent the urge to eat treats before they have been inspected by parents. Never eat treats that have been opened.

• Leave porch or other outside lights on to make clear that trick-or-treaters are welcome.

A "Community Garden" at Hearthstone?

Recently, Kevin Harding and Terry Messick, when asked about this, indicated they would consider setting aside a small plot of land for those of us interested in tending a small flower or vegetable garden.

Hearthstone resident Bob Connelly is willing to head up a committee to organize the “Hearthstone Community Garden” So, if you miss having your own plot of land to grow flowers or food for your table email him at bobconnelly@inbox.com (Please put “Hearthstone Community Garden” in the Subject line of your email so your message doesn't end up in his spam folder.)

Bob is not a gardener himself, but thinks a Community Garden would be a nice addition to our neighborhood and probably help sell a few more homes. He will arrange a meeting where we can meet and discuss our Community Garden.

What is a Community Garden? Very simply, it is any piece of land gardened by a group of people!

What are Benefits of Community Gardens?

-Improves the quality of life for people in the garden
-Provides a catalyst for neighborhood and community development
-Stimulates Social Interaction
-Encourages Self-Reliance
-Beautifies Neighborhoods
-Produces Nutritious Food
-Reduces Family Food Budgets
-Conserves Resources
-Creates opportunity for recreation, exercise, therapy, and education
-Reduces Crime
-Preserves Green Space
-Creates income opportunities and economic development
-Reduces city heat from streets and parking lots
-Provides opportunities for intergenerational and cross-cultural connections

So, if you think this is something you would like to see in our neighborhood and you want to participate please contact Bob and
let's plant some seeds!
